Overview

The Eswatini National Trust Commission promotes and funds environmental education in Eswatini through the National Environmental Education Program (NEEP). Environmental education programs are conducted in Eswatini’s nature conservation areas, as well as in schools through opportunities such as environmental essay writing competitions and optional secondary-level coursework. Eswatini is an active member of the Environmental Education Association of Southern Africa (EEASA).

Policy & Practice

National Legislation

The National Environmental Education Program (NEEP) is a product of the National Trust Commission Act #9 of 1972 which has been mandated to coordinate and promote environmental education in Eswatini. The goal of the NEEP is to “promote the understanding, acceptance, application and evaluation of environmental conservation principles and practices by all the people of Eswatini in order that a better quality of life results.”

EE in K-12 Education

Environmental education is included within the high school curriculum as an optional subject in the last two years of secondary school. The syllabus includes instruction on the relationships of organisms with one another and their environment.

Professional Development

The only organized group of environmental educators in Eswatini is operated by the state under the Eswatini National Trust Commission. It is a dimension of the National Environmental Education Program (NEEP), which conducts education in the nature conservation areas. Workshops and national symposia are conducted to encourage school participation in environmental awareness competitions at the sub-regional level.

Leadership

Professional Associations

Individuals and organizations involved in environmental education in Eswatini participate in the Environmental Education Association of Southern Africa (EEASA), which held its 33rd conference in Eswatini in September 2015.

EE in the National Government

Within the national government, the Eswatini National Trust Commission supports environmental education by focusing primarily on ecotourism, a national radio program, and school engagement in environmental competitions (e.g., essay writing).

National EE Campaigns and Funding

A primary environmental education funder in Eswatini is the Eswatini National Trust Commission, which draws funds from the national budget.
