Solution
Use of Artificial Intelligence to Assist Marine Spatial Planning Worldwide
This project addresses the urgent need for sustainable marine resource management through Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). By utilizing CAPTAIN, an open-source AI tool, the project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating AI into MSP to optimize marine activities and biodiversity conservation. The initiative will create AI-driven insights by analyzing data on species distributions, resource use, and opportunity costs, thereby accelerating the development of marine spatial plans specialized for different regions. The project will emphasize community engagement, recognizing that human input is crucial for successful MSP. To this end, it will involve resource managers, scientists, local communities, decision-makers, and corporations through workshops, public meetings, training sessions, and educational programs. These efforts will ensure diverse stakeholder participation, especially from marginalized groups, and foster a collaborative approach to marine conservation. Ultimately, the project seeks to build broad support for MSP and promote sustainable practices for preserving marine biodiversity and resources.
