The Dark Side of Scuba Diving Tourism And What To Do About It

This project examines the dual impact of reef tourism on coral ecosystems and local communities in the Philippines and Indonesia. While reef tourism is a vital economic resource for coastal economies, it also poses significant environmental and social challenges. The project will collaborate with dive operators to assess their practices through data analysis and surveys, providing feedback to promote sustainable tourism behaviors. A compelling photo story will document the beauty and fragility of reef habitats, the scale and impact of tourism, and local conservation efforts, with the aims of raising awareness about the nuanced effects of reef tourism. Additionally, the project will engage in science communication by hosting talks and collaborating with organizations to advocate for better diving practices and training. By integrating research, storytelling, and industry collaboration, the initiative seeks to foster a more sustainable approach to reef tourism that benefits both coral reefs and the communities that rely on them.
