Minister of Environment of Taiwan, Chi-Ming Peng, upholding his June commitment to publicly support the Paris Olympics’ “responsibility to address climate change” initiative, announced the launch of the Environmental-Friendly Sports Events Collaboration Program. This program integrates environmental actions into domestic sports events, offering an innovative interpretation of the value of environmental education.

Key highlights of the program include: providing reusable ice packs and wraps in the University Baseball League (UBL) to reduce the waste of single-use items; adopting environmentally friendly materials for athlete uniforms in the L’Étape by Tour de France-Sun Moon Lake and 2024 Mizuno Marathon Relay Race to promote the concept of resource sustainability; and introducing the use of reusable cups in the High School Basketball League (HBL) to reinforce practical applications of plastic reduction. Through these practical and accessible measures, the program successfully brings environmental concepts closer to people’s daily lives.

In addition to the innovative promotion of environmentally friendly practices in sports events, Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Taiwan-U.S. Eco-Campus Partnership Program by holding the 2024 Taiwan-US Eco-Campus Partnership Award Ceremony on December 25, 2024. The event recognized 84 schools certified under the Eco-Schools program for the year, including 16 Green Flag schools, 31 Silver Award schools, and 37 Bronze Award schools. Notably, the number of Green Flag certifications reached a record high, underscoring significant progress and substantial achievements in embedding environmental education deeply into Taiwan’s educational system.

As of late January 2025, statistics indicate that a total of 753 schools across Taiwan have participated in the program, with 492 successfully obtaining certification. This highlights the program’s profound impact on advancing environmental education and fostering sustainable development at all levels of education. Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment stated that the core value behind both the promotion of environmentally friendly sports events and the Taiwan-U.S. Eco-Campus Partnership Program lies in integrating the principles of environmental education into public awareness and daily life. Looking ahead, the Ministry plans to continue aligning with international efforts and deepening Taiwan-U.S. collaboration. Furthermore, it will actively explore ways to expand the inclusion of environmental protection and education into various activities
that engage the public. Through these efforts, the Ministry aims to inspire broader societal participation in environmental protection and infuse greater vitality and innovation into the promotion of sustainable development principles.
